FAMILY MOVIES WITH A MESSAGE WE LOVE!
Family movie time is such a fun way to bring everyone together! Let’s be honest, if the movie is good you can be any age with kids or not to enjoy a great ‘family’ movie. It is even better when the movie has a great message that educates and sparks important conversations!
So here are a few of our favourites we’d love to share, from our family to yours!
Bee Movie
Released in 2007 this adventure, comedy, animation was ahead of it’s time for the world to come to understand the importance of Bee’s. Starring Renee Zellweger and Jerry Seinfeld (also one of the writers), Bee movie is a super sweet and fun look into the life of Bee’s and the huge impact the environment would suffer if they weren’t doing their important work. Bee’s are so much more than honey and this movies is another way to inform us of the respect they deserve.
Fern Gully
This 1992 cartoon animated movie is a cult classic that was well before it’s time and deserves to delight and educate many generations. Fern Gully takes us into the beauty and magic of an Australian rainforest and introduces themes of deforestation, and animal testing. It is an international production between the United states and Australia that houses some iconic voices such as Tim Curry and Robin Williams. Although it is criticized for its comedic approach at times and how everything ends up ok which seems to lessen the urgency, we don’t want to traumatize everyone while still sparking this conversation.
Inside Out
I think it is safe to say that it is about time we started talking about mental health from a young age and exploring how as humans we are many things. Inside Out gives us an internal representation of emotions and what it could look like when they are not working together. Mental health for adults is an endless exploration but to really end the stigma bringing it to the family movie sphere in this way I personally think is genius. This 2015 animation which stars the voice of Amy Poehler is a fun comedy yet still manages to express the darkness of feelings and how we can learn to understand ourselves a little better.
Osmosis Jones
This 2001 film flew under the radar for the cool conversation this brings up. Weather you love it or you just think it’s really weird, it shows us how hard our bodies are working at all times. Also, the concept is pretty genius because who knew we carry around all the action, drama, and comedy we need with us everyday! Starring some big guns such as Bill Murray, Chris Rock, Molly Shannon, David Hyde Pierce, and Laurence Fishburne this live action, animation mix, is a fun play into appreciating the big job our bodies do for us. Oh, and fyi there is some gross out humour so either sorry, or you’re welcome!
Happy Feet
Of course Happy Feet! This film stole so many hearts with it’s music and message behind the adorable characters. Another international collaboration between Australia and the U.S., it brings to the forefront global warming, animal captivity and overfishing. We are helped to digest these heavy subjects with an incredible soundtrack that you won’t be able to help dancing to. Not to mention the captivating voices of Elijah Wood, Brittany Murphy, Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman and Robin Williams leading the long fabulous list!
Well, this is our list for now. There are so many but the more the merrier! We’d love to know what family movies you would add and why?
