Making a difference
On a beautiful sunny summer’s day, we resumed our first Beach patrol in such a long time.
It was wonderful to see 38 people turn out at our new permanent time of 10am each month.
So many happy smiling faces – both old and new friends – glad to be back cleaning the beach together.
While many people had been beach cleaning alone, this day gave us the opportunity to record all the data on the Litter Stopper app.
So we’re glad to report that we collected much material – though much of it small and lightweight. As usual, many cigarette butts – 348 – including from around the car park, despite smoking being banned on all Bayside foreshore areas. Many small pieces of lightweight plastic fragments – over 450 greater than 5cm, and 550 smaller than 5cm. We also collected 12 tops of silicone guns, 2 fishing hooks and lines, and a pair of thongs (in quite good condition). We found only one PPE, though many reported having picked several up during the week.
We recorded a total of 21kg of waste from the beach.
Many thanks to all those who turned up, and especially to Scott, Beth and Ellie who do so much of the preparation, and help make this whole thing work so well.
Our next beach clean will be on Saturday, 5 February, at 10am – at the Beaumaris Life Saving Club. We’ll look forward to seeing you there, and we're wishing everyone a safe and holiday season :)
